Obie Wan was never the shining knight rescuing a fallen nation. Rather, he was in fact the dark lord, seeking to corrupt any who saw the truth before they might come to believe in the truth.
Obie Wan dared to say the he was the truth, and his followers believed him, chanting "Yes We Can!" while hoping for a change they knew little to nothing the substance of.
